The March 23 game against the Columbus Blue Jackets was also Russian Heritage night at Verizon Center. During pregame warmups, Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin debuted a special pair of custom-painted skates depicting the flags and landmarks of the United States and Russia. It was the first time in NHL history that a player has worn custom footwear, though Ovi was not allowed to wear the skates during the actual game. The skates were put up for auction during the game, and the bidding continued over the next two days until the end of the Capitals’ March 25th game against Arizona.
The final numbers have been counted, and Ovi’s skates raised a whopping $9,500 for the American Special Hockey Association. Way to go, Ovi!
