The Stanley Cup Playoffs have begun, but more importantly, NHL players’ Stanley Cup Beards are making their debut on the 2018-19 post-season stage.
Players all across the league will wait until their eventual victory or elimination before shaving a hair off their chinny-chin-chins. It doesn’t matter if their beards are sparse, luscious, or nonexistent–it doesn’t matter how much we want some of them shave it all off and save us the pain, Andre–players around the league believe that not shaving during the playoffs will bring their team luck.
Hockey Hall of Famer and six-time Stanley Cup winner Bryan Trottier narrated the origin story of the playoff beard superstition in a cleverly cartoon-animated video by the NHL. Trottier traces the superstition back to his playoff debut with the New York Islanders.

Like Alex Ovechkin with Gillette, Tom Wilson has shaved his massive playoff beard for a major company.
The first-line forward filmed a video for Philips Canada and showed off his acting chops.
Tuesday night on Twitter, Alex Ovechkin announced in his own Special Ovi Way that he will be combining forces again with a former sponsor: Gillette.
The Washington Capitals have been in the playoffs for just under two months now. Unlike every season save one in the last four decades, this has been sufficient time for our special boys to grow some mighty fearsome playoff beards.
But, the playoffs will last somewhere between one to three more games, so if we’re going to catalog and rank the Caps’ beards, we need to do it right now.
What follows is an authoritative and comprehensive accounting of the playoff beards of the 2017-18 Washington Capitals, sorted into tiers about which there can be no debate, so please no comments on this article. Thanks in advance.

The Capitals’ morning skate left us with more questions than answers. Why is Chandler Stephenson here? Will Karl Alzner ever play again? And What is that thing on Andre Burakovsky’s face?
Yes, everyone’s favorite Swedish cinnamon roll cut his hair and he’s also trying to grow a playoff beard.
During the national anthem tonight, NBCSN cut to a close-up shot of Braden Holtby standing in the crease. Look at that beard. It’s growing so rapidly that I’m worried Holtby will look like this when the Caps return home for game three.
The Holtbeard is a sentient being. Like a sun-hungry seedling, it is searching for light. It made two of Holtby’s saves in the first period. During a stoppage in play, a morning dove flew out his beard, searching for food for its babies.

I headed up to Arlington today to check out Caps practice. There wasn’t much news out of Kettler but that won’t keep us from trying way too hard to make some.
Twenty-year-old Dmitry Orlov does a lot of things well. He’s plays solid defense, can provide some huge blasts from the point, and is having an all-around fantastic rookie year. One thing, however, is not Dima’s forte: the playoff beard. Karl Alzner’s day job is safe, it appears.
