The 2019 NHL Draft begins on Friday, June 21 in Vancouver. The first round will be broadcast on Friday night and the following six rounds will all be squeezed in on Saturday. Later draft picks basically get the same treatment as technical awards at the Golden Globes.

Washington had the fourth overall pick in the 2006 draft in Vancouver. The day of the draft Boston tried to trade up from fifth. When George McPhee asked who they wanted, the answer was “The Swede.”
McPhee said he’d run it by the guys at his table–which included a nervous-looking Alex Ovechkin–and they certainly did their best to pretend to consider trading away the pick that would net them Nicklas Backstrom.
After pretending to have a serious conversation at the draft table McPhee simply remarked to his compatriot that he “looked marvelous.”

Like any good captain would, Alex Ovechkin was watching the NHL Draft live, Friday night.
Ovechkin posted an Instagram Story of NBCSN’s coverage of the draft using vertical video from his phone. Ovechkin added some narration and got excited when the Capitals selected Russian defenseman Alexander Alexeyev with the 31st pick of the 2018 NHL Draft.
We’re gonna liveblog this bad boy. I’ve done some work on trying to guess at who the Capitals will be taking at #31 today, if they indeed still own that pick when it comes on the clock. You can check that out below.
Other than that, let’s see what kind of craziness the NHL has for us tonight.

Capitals goaltender and restricted free agent Philipp Grubauer wants to be a starting goaltender in the NHL and the Capitals are willing to trade him so that he can accomplish that feat. Now what exactly the Capitals could get in return and which team exactly he will end up on is still a mystery.
Friday morning, TSN’s Bob Mckenzie did an interview on TSN1050 and stated that the Capitals believe they can secure a first round pick for Grubauer.

The first round of the 2018 NHL entry draft begins tonight at 7:30 PM on NBCSN, SN, and TVA Sports. The Capitals will be picking last in the first round because they won the Stanley freakin’ Cup. Here’s a look at some guys I think could be available for selection by the Caps at pick #31.

Liveblog for the draft? Why not. Auston Matthews is the consensus number one overall pick, but let’s see how the rest of the draft will go. The Caps are selecting 26th. I’ll be happy with anything but another goaltender.

Every year, the NHL unveils new hats at the draft and they’re always super fancy. This year’s edition features each team’s logo on the hat and then either the team’s alternate logo or a zoomed-in detail of the original logo on the bill. The NHL’s shield is also located on the back of the fitted cap, just as a friendly reminder where your hard-earned cash is going.
