Mitch Love’s hiring helped spur on Capitals’ free agency interest in Matthew Phillips: ‘They kinda came out of nowhere’

The Washington Capitals will host the Calgary Flames on Monday night at Capital One Arena. The matchup will be an important one for the team as they look to get back on track after their Opening Night shutout defeat but it will perhaps be an even bigger game for offseason acquisition Matthew Phillips.

Phillips spent his entire career in the Calgary organization up until signing with the Capitals in free agency this past summer. Right before Phillips made the jump to DC, Mitch Love, Phillips’ head coach with Calgary’s AHL affiliate, was just announced to be part of Spencer Carbery’s staff with the Capitals.

Phillips spoke with Monumental Sports Network’s Tarik El-Bashir about the process of leaving the Flames and how Love helped impact it.

Mitch Love could be a hot head coaching commodity in 2024

The Washington Capitals hired Mitch Love as the first member of new head coach Spencer Carbery’s staff in late June. Love, the reigning two-time AHL coach of the year, departed the Calgary Flames organization and has made his way east to DC.

But, his stay in the nation’s capital could be a short one. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman is already bringing up Love’s name for potential head coaching vacancies come 2024.

Behind the scenes of the Laughlin Family Foundation’s third annual golf tournament

Longtime Washington Capitals announcer Craig Laughlin had local sports celebrities traveling to Maryland for a good cause, Monday.

The Laughlin Family Foundation held its third annual celebrity golf tournament at the Crofton Country Club. The event allowed Capitals fans the opportunity to rub elbows or complete a round of golf with some of the biggest sports stars and personalities in the area. It also raised nearly a quarter million dollars ($220,000) for rare cancer research – the most in the foundation’s history.

Once anyone experiences a Laughlin event for the first time, it’s difficult to not return in future years. I’ll do my best to explain why.

Brian MacLellan on the Capitals’ new coaching staff: ‘I think we rounded it out really well’

The Washington Capitals parted ways with head coach Peter Laviolette and assistants Blaine Forsythe and Kevin McCarthy in April after the team had put together their worst full, 82-game season in 16 years.

The Caps then hired former Hershey Bears bench boss Spencer Carbery in late May but held off on filling out the rest of Carbery’s staff until later in the offseason.

That process was finally completed in July when both Kirk Muller and Kenny McCudden were brought on as assistants to go along with Mitch Love’s hiring the month prior.

General manager Brian MacLellan oversaw that undertaking and had his first chance to comment on the full staff’s composition when he met with reporters on Monday to discuss Tom Wilson’s recent long-term extension.

Capitals new assistant coach Mitch Love has past connections to three Capitals prospects

The Washington Capitals made their first hire to join Spencer Carbery’s coaching staff on Thursday when they brought in assistant coach Mitch Love to handle the team’s defensemen.

Love spoke with assembled DC media for the first time on Friday. The 39-year-old, two-time AHL coach of the year discussed a variety of topics including his familiarity with a few names in the Caps organization that just took home a Calder Cup with the Hershey Bears.

Capitals hire Mitch Love as an assistant coach

The Washington Capitals announced on Thursday that they have hired Mitch Love as an assistant coach. Love is the first coach to join Spencer Carbery’s staff from outside of the organization.

The 39-year-old Love spent last season coaching the AHL’s Calgary Wranglers and was considered a “prized AHL coach”, garnering interest across the NHL.

Love was rumored to being getting consideration for the Calgary Flames open head coaching position. He will primarily handle the Capitals’ defensemen.
