My experience at the Capitals annual Hockey ‘n Heels event

RMNB Crasher Julie Cannon wrote this piece about the Capitals Hockey ‘n Heels 2020 event.

On Tuesday, January 14th, the Washington Capitals all-female fan club, Scarlet Caps, held their annual Hockey ‘n Heels event. Founded in 2009, Scarlet Caps is dedicated to growing and supporting the women’s hockey community in the DC area and the Hockey ‘n Heels event provides instructional sessions and on-ice demonstrations to generate interest in hockey.

Tuesday’s event included broomball games, photo opportunities, stickhandling and shooting instruction, and seminars on nutrition, the salary cap, and a Q&A with Haley Skarupa.

This was my first time attending Hockey ‘n Heels and what the experience was like.

Capitals players support women’s hockey: ‘It’s something that is on the rise’

Women’s hockey has been in a brighter spotlight in recent weeks with the inclusion of professional women’s players in the NHL’s All-Star weekend in San Jose, CA and the NWHL’s All-Star weekend in Nashville, TN. But women’s hockey has been thriving and growing in the USA at an impressive rate for a long time.

USA Hockey’s public registration numbers show a nearly five percent increase in women’s hockey in 2017-18, compared to only one percent increase in men’s. Men’s hockey still has larger numbers overall, but the difference in the rate of growth reflects a change in the broader nature of hockey in the USA.

We spoke with some Washington Capitals players about the importance of women’s hockey during the team’s “Hockey ‘n Heels” event.

Capitals players involved in Hockey ‘N Heels event hope team’s female supporters ‘become lifelong fans of the game’

On Monday evening, the Capitals held the 13th annual Hockey ‘N Heels event. The event, which is exclusive to members of the Scarlet Caps, is a special evening dedicated to the team’s female fans.

The evening featured instructional sessions from a handful of Capitals and off-ice presentations, including a question and answer session with USA gold medal-winning Olympian Haley Skarupa.

Caps fans take slapshots with four-time Olympic medalist Jenny Potter at Hockey ‘n Heels (Photos)

Washington Capitals fans enjoyed a girls’ night out at Hockey ‘n Heels at Kettler Capitals Iceplex, Tuesday evening. The Scarlet Caps hosted their annual night of on-ice sessions with Capital players and alumni as well as off-ice talks with coaches, nutrition guides, and broadcast talent.

Caps Fans Play and Pose with the Pros at Hockey ‘N Heels (Video)

The Washington Capitals’ Club Scarlet hosted Hockey ‘N Heels Tuesday night at Kettler Capitals Iceplex. This members-only event took about 200 fans through different aspects of the game from up close. Participants played broom ball with Evgeny Kuznetsov and Stan Galiev, took photobooth photos with Aaron Ness, practiced slapshots, and learned how to use a glove and blocker with Philipp Grubauer. After a busy first half, fans headed up stairs to learn more from the Caps’ coaches, equipment staff, refs, and CSN commentators Joe Beninati and Craig Laughlin.
