Capitals score five unanswered goals during absurd comeback in second period

Someone pinch me. This can’t be real.

In the first period, the Washington Capitals looked listless. Awful, terrible, and dreadful. They gave up three consecutive goals to the Islanders and looked like they would finally lose their first game in regulation this season.

Instead, our Cardiac Caps found their scoring touch at intermission and scored f i v e goals during the period they suck at the most — the second — to take the lead.

‘Let’s just leave it all out there’: ‘Pissed off’ Caps score 5 unanswered goals after Devon Toews’ bird-celly taunt

On January 5, the Washington Capitals overcame a two-goal deficit in the final minute of the third period to beat the San Jose Sharks in overtime. A comeback of this nature was the first in franchise history. 13 days later, the Caps one-upped themselves against the New York Islanders — one of the best shutdown teams in the third period — and former bench boss Barry Trotz.

The Capitals faced a 4-1 deficit after Devon Toews beat Braden Holtby wide open in front of the net with 2:35 left in the second period. The fourth-line forward then added insult to injury, flapping his arms and mocking Evgeny Kuznetsov with the bird celebration.

The complexion of the game changed after that.

Jakub Vrana, TJ Oshie, and Lars Eller score in final minute and overtime to complete insane comeback against Sharks

The game was supposedly over. With a minute left in the third period, the San Jose Sharks scored an empty-net goal to make it 4-2. Capitals fans began filing for the exits. But they would have reason to return seconds later.

Jakub Vrana and TJ Oshie both scored 6-on-5, last-minute goals to push overtime. Then in the extra session, Lars Eller scored on a two-on-one break to give the Capitals the win. Washington scored three goals in two minutes and 48 seconds.

“That’s the best [comeback] I have ever seen since I’ve been here,” Nic Dowd, one of the team’s goalscorers on the day, said after the game. “That was pretty epic.”
