The Washington Capitals lost in overtime to the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday after a hard-fought, back-and-forth game that saw Alex Ovechkin and Tage Thompson combine for five goals. Tonight they’ll try to keep their attention with the lowly Columbus Blue Jackets and attempt to not play too much with their food.

The Blue Jackets are scuffling badly. They have the second-worst record in the NHL and are losers of eight of their last 10. Their goal differential is a super horrendous minus-48.

Tonight’s game is on ESPN. If it’s anything like the Caps-Blackhawks game a few weeks ago, prepare yourself for features being aired over Ovi goals and incoherent mumbling amongst Hockey Hall of Famers. The opening faceoff will be a little after 7 pm.

Highlights from the Capitals’ 4-3 (OT) preseason victory over the Blue Jackets

The Washington Capitals were successful in their preseason finale as they took down the Columbus Blue Jackets in overtime. Exhibition season complete.

Anthony Mantha, Alex Ovechkin, Nic Dowd, and Dylan Strome all got on the board for the Caps.

Highlights from the Capitals’ 2-1 preseason loss to the Blue Jackets

The Washington Capitals wrapped up the road portion of their preseason schedule with a 2-1 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Caps took an early 1-0 lead but couldn’t come up with another in the final two periods.

Aliaksei Protas was the only goal scorer for the team clad in white.

Blue Jackets re-sign pending UFA goaltender Joonas Korpisalo

One of the possible names the Washington Capitals could have targeted for goaltending help this summer is off of the market.

Pending unrestricted free agent, Joonas Korpisalo is pending no more as he has signed a one-year contract extension to stay with the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Korpisalo played the backup role in the Columbus net this season, the worst statistical year of his career. The Finnish netminder amassed a 7-11-0 record with a gaudy 4.15 goals-against average and .877 save percentage.

Predators and Sharks to open 2022-23 regular season with game in Prague as NHL continues Global Series

The National Hockey League is bringing back its Global Series event for the 2022-23 season after postponing it prior due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

There will be two exhibition games and four regular-season games played in four European cities, starting with the Nashville Predators facing off against SC Bern at PostFinance Area in Bern, Switzerland on October 3 and the San Jose Sharks heading to Berlin, Germany to face off against Eisbaren Berlin at Mercedes-Benz Arena on October 4.

The first regular-season games will be between the Predators and Sharks at O2 Arena in Prague on October 7 and 8.

Capitals kick the extra point in Columbus: numbers for the morning after

The Washington Capitals are on a roll as their latest blowout win over the Columbus Blue Jackets makes them 6-0-1 in the month of March. The five-goal win is tied for the team’s largest margin of victory this season.

Lights out in Lumbus: Caps beat Blue Jackets by a lot

With 12 minutes left in Thursday’s game, the Columbus Blue Jackets pulled their goalie in an act of desperation. Conor Sheary scored almost instantly, cementing a confident win for the Washington Capitals.

Anthony Mantha scored twice in the first period, set up for one by TJ Oshie and getting the second thanks to a lucky bounce off goalie Joonas Korpisalo’s skate. Marty Fehervary exploited a bad line change to make it 3-0 in the second period, but the Jackets struck back with a one-touch goal by Bjorkstrand. Alex Ovechkin scored his 38th of the season with a one-timer on the power play, then Patrik Laine had an unreal deflection early in the third. Connor McMichael got a break in the third period, getting credit for Columbus’s own-goal.

Columbus pulled the goalie with almost thirteen minutes left, so Conor Sheary scored an empty-netter basically immediately. Evgeny Kuznetsov got a power-play goal later in the third period.

Caps win 7-2.

Live blog: Capitals hit the road to take on Blue Jackets

The Washington Capitals are back on the ice Thursday to play their first game of a back-to-back series against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Friday they take on the Carolina Hurricanes in Raleigh.

The Capitals will role with the same lines they went with against the Islanders on Tuesday.

Vitek Vanecek will get the start.

Goaltending and special teams burn the Capitals again: numbers for the morning after

The Washington Capitals have had two main performance issues this season and those are the inability to get even league average goaltending and special teams that consistently lose them games.

That was on display again in a 5-4 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Not-so-special teams: Blue Jackets beat Caps 5-4

The Washington Capitals lost a winnable game to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday night. Special teams seems to be the culprit in this one. And a new goalie wouldn’t hurt.

The fourth line (or at least they’d be the fourth line in a normal season) had a big game, notching goals by Hathaway and Dowd in the first and second periods. Columbus responded with three goals in the second period — Laine, Boqvist, and Laine again — all on the power play or immediately after a power play expired.

Playing in his first NHL game, Trey Fix-Wolansky beat Pheonix Copley with a dribbler, which brought Ilya Samsonov into the game. With two and a half minutes left, all-star Tom Wilson tied the game with a quick wrist shot from the slot, only to see the Caps lose it in the final minute off Boone Jenner’s shot.

Caps lose.
