Caps announce starting time for Game Five, officially bump Chris Brown concert

The Washington Capitals officially announced that Game Five of the first round series against the Maple Leafs will be hosted at the Verizon Center at 7 PM on Friday, April 21. This update officially bumps the Chris Brown concert to Sunday, April 23 and, according to TicketMaster, all tickets for the concert will be honored for the rescheduled date.

Game Five will be televised on CSN Mid-Atlantic.

The Maple Leafs overtime win in Game Two forces cancellation of Chris Brown concert

On Saturday night, The Toronto Maple Leafs and Washington Capitals battled for four hours and 21 minutes, with thrilling action that caused me to fall out of my seat during the high-stakes, anxious moments of overtime. In the end, the smashing cowbell and light-up beer mug party was ruined by a goal from Kasperi Kapanen at 11:36 pm, giving the Leafs a 4-3 win in the game which tied the first round series at one game apiece.

It turns out Kapanen crashed another party as well. Kapanen’s goal will force a Game Five on Friday, April 21. Chris Brown‘s The Party Tour with Fabulous, O.T. and more (!) is booked for that night at Verizon Center. And this time, the R&B star will draw the short end of the stick. He’s going to be booted for a later date.

Caps Acquiring Bourque Brothers Like Rangers Acquiring Staals

With less than 24 hours to go before the trade deadline, the Capitals announced a deal and it’s a minor one. General manager Brian MacLellan has traded Chris Brown, a player who was best known as the prospect acquired in the second Martin Erat deal, for Ryan Bourque.

Bourque, a tiny 25-year-old left wing, is the son of Hall of Fame defenseman Ray Bourque and the younger brother of tiny future AHL Hall of Famer Chris Bourque. The brothers will play together in Hershey.

So yes, the Caps can now say they have ALL THE BOURQUES.

Thursday evening, the Capitals announced that they re-signed restricted free-agent Chris Brown to a two-year, two-way contract. That leaves goaltender Braden Holtby and forward Marcus Johansson, who both elected arbitration last week, as the only RFAs the team has left to sign.

During the summer, MacLellan has talked about how Brown, who the team acquired from the Coyotes for Martin Erat, will have every opportunity to make the team’s bottom six out of training camp.

“We’re going to give Galiev a shot,” MacLellan said to Mike Vogel. “Chris Brown is going to get a shot. [Goaltender Philipp] Grubauer is going to get a shot and [Nate Schmidt] is going to get a shot. We’ve got some guys who have put in some time development-wise [at AHL Hershey], and it’s going to be up to them to perform. They’ll all have chances to make the roster.”

Breaking Down the Hershey Bears’ Line Brawl, Pheonix Copley’s Goalie Fight (GIF)

Saturday night, the Hershey Bears and the Bridgeport Sound Tigers (the New York Islanders affiliate) played one of the most entertaining and violent American Hockey League games of the season. The Bears and Sound Tigers combined to score seven goals and earn nearly 200 penalty minutes. The game featured a chaotic line-brawl, a goalie fight, eight ejections, and 12 misconducts.

By now, you’ve probably already seen the video (taken by RMNB alumnus Kyle Mace) of Caps prospects Steve Oleksy, Connor Carrick, Chris Brown, Liam O’Brien, and the Bears’ goalie combatant, Pheonix Copley. By Sunday night, the video had amassed over 130,000 views.

This morning at Kettler Capitals Iceplex, Barry Trotz took a hammer to the lines that have been so successful in the early part of the season. Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom have been split up. The team’s second line, consisting of Marcus Johansson, Andre Burakovsky, and Troy Brouwer, has been blown to smithereens as well.

The Capitals also made a roster move this morning, recalling Tom Wilson from AHL Hershey and demoting Chris Brown. Brooks Laich, who suffered what appeared to be a shoulder injury last week, did not skate with the team and will not play Wednesday. Trotz believes Laich may practice later in the week. Come on, baked goods, I thought you had magical healing powers!

The Boys Are Back in Town: Photos From the First Day of Caps Training Camp

One hundred sixty days after the Washington Capitals missed the playoffs for the first time since 2007, 66 players took to the ice in Arlington, Virginia looking to atone for a lost season. New head coach Barry Trotz put his players through a 45-minute practice and then a rigorous skate test, which left many exhausted, including Alex Ovechkin. This year’s training camp is supposed to be a hard one, part of Trotz’s plan to transform this team from an also-ran into a real success. The Caps have just two days of training camp to get their legs under them before the preseason opens on Sunday.

Washington Capitals Prospect Rankings: Summer 2014

With rookie camp upon us, RMNB presents the new edition of its semiannual prospect rankings.

Prospect rankings factor in a player’s potential, his probability to reach his ceiling (including an assessment of that player’s adaptation to NHL’s style of play), and physical and mental maturity.

The Caps prospect pool is considered top-heavy, with four Caps prospects ranked in top-50 league-wide by both Corey Pronman and NHL.com. However, there’s believed to be a significant drop-off in talent after that. While Capitals management has tried to make their prospect pool deeper, they’ve still got work to do. The Caps are considered thin at center in particular, underlined by auditioning their two top wingers for a center slot.

What the Actual Hell Happened on the Jeffrey Goal? (GIF)

When the Washington Capitals gave up two straight breakaways to the Dallas Stars while on their own power play last night, I thought that was rock bottom.

Nope.

Rock bottom was Dustin Jeffrey‘s second period goal. The tally, which came 34 seconds after Ryan Whitney’s 2-on-0 goal on a botched Capitals line change, gave the Dallas Stars a 3-0 lead. It essentially ended the game.

The defense on the goal was atrocious. I’d waste my time or yours with a description. The screenshots and video say everything.

Jason Chimera’s Screaming, Tongue-Wagging Video-Bomb of Chris Brown (GIF)

On Comcast Sportsnet’s pre-game show Capitals Central (alliteration!), Smokin’ Al Koken interviewed forward Chris Brown to ask the prospect what it was like to score his first NHL goal against the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday.

Before Brown could even get a word out, Jason Chimera stormed from the glass doors behind them to unleash yet another Caps video-bomb.
