On Friday, the NHLPA officially approved the new CBA through a secret ballot vote. This CBA will be effective through the 2025-26 season.
The NHLPA Executive Board approved the tentative agreement on Tuesday, moving to player votes this week. Only a simple majority (>50%) of player votes was needed to pass the CBA.

The NHL is one step closer to returning to complete the 2019-20 season.
Tuesday night, shortly before 11 PM, the NHLPA announced that its Executive Board approved the new CBA, referring it to players for a full member vote.
The NHL and NHLPA are nearing agreement on a tentative memorandum of understanding for a new six-year Collective Bargaining Agreement and a return-to-play plan that would see the NHL complete the 2020 season with a 24-team playoff. TSN’s Frank Seravalli is reporting that “the deal is believed to be imminent” and that “multiple stakeholders in the NHL community have now been apprised of the details.”
TSN’s Bob McKenzie added that the “real significance of this massive agreement” is that it provides an “economic roadmap” for the NHL and NHLPA to recover from the harmful business effects of the coronavirus pandemic.
The news comes on the heels of the St. Louis Blues canceling practice on Friday due to multiple players testing positive for COVID-19 and the NHL reporting on Monday that 26 players total have tested positive for the novel coronavirus since early June.
Over the last 27 years, there have been 3 lockouts and 1 strike, causing the NHL to cancel 152 games including an entire dang season in 2004.
According to The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun, the NHL must decide by September 1 and the NHLPA must decide by September 15 if they will opt-out of the current CBA for 2020.

The NHL and NHLPA announced in separate releases Wednesday that there will be no World Cup of Hockey in 2020.
Both the league and the players’ union have been meeting — last week in Las Vegas and this week in Toronto — to try and ensure labor peace in 2020 but were unable to come to a quick agreement.

According to Katie Carrera, the Washington Capitals have assigned Nathan Walker and three other players to Hershey.
During the Caps Convention, Caps general manager George McPhee said Walker has signed a one-year AHL deal with Hershey:

The Australian forward, as Mike Vogel tweeted Thursday, couldn’t be signed to an NHL contract due to what’s known as the “Tomas Hyka Rule”.

The Washington Capitals have announced that Czech defenseman Tomas Kundratek has signed a two-year contract worth $1.1 million. Kundratek played 49 games with the AHL’s Hershey Bears last season, scoring 16 goals and tallying 31 points. His surprising breakthrough resulted in an extended look in the NHL, where Kundratek played in 25 games, netting one goal and seven points.
This new deal with the 23-year-old blueliner is another example of George McPhee’s crafty management.

Let’s start with a disclosure: we aren’t actively covering the lockout. Financial negotiations (and their public face) are all about posturing, tedium, and equivocation, whereas our principal interest in hockey has always been scoar, moar, and goals. That said, our Alex Ovechkin has spoken out about the ongoing melee between NHL ownership and players, and it’s definitely newsworthy.
Talking with SovSport’s Dmitry Ponomarenko after Saturday’s game, Ovechkin gave his spin on the NHL’s offer to the players earlier this week, dismissing the proposal as “nothing new” and “good only after a quick look.” Ovechkin continued:
If we speak in Russian, the NHL provided a beautiful dream to the media and fans, but in reality it’s a lie. It’s showboating. The league is trying to show that they are kind of working, trying to save the season, but they offer nothing new. It’s all the same, just in different words.
In the interview, Ovechkin carries some water for the players’ association, but he ends with a bombshell: he is willing to walk away from the NHL if the new CBA is no good.
