Former Capitals defenseman Brendan Witt received a meaningful honor over the summer. Witt’s hometown of Humboldt, Saskatchewan, immortalized the former first-round pick with a sign at Glenn Hall Park.
The metal sign features the highlights of Witt’s career and is surrounded by Humboldt’s four other NHL players: Hall of Famer Glenn Hall, Ralph Klassen, Brad Lauer, and Jerome Engele.
You knew it was coming. Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin has taken up the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, and he has done it in true Ovi fashion.
Wearing only tight black shorts and a gold necklace, Ovechkin– whose head is cut off in the video– introduces the video from a shower before dumping ice water on his head.

Brendan Witt spent his twenties on the Washington Capitals’ blue line. From 1995 to 2006, Witt loosened fillings and racked up PIMs in the old bronze and blue uniforms. If you grew up loving the Capitals at the same I did, Witt was a big part of your childhood.
So Witt’s hourlong studio appearance on DC101’s Elliot in the Morning on Friday was a big treat. Elliot Segal and Witt exchanged stories like old friends, which I suppose they are. They talked about pranking Dale Hunter during the 98 finals, being Chris Simon‘s roommate, Jaromir Jagr‘s work ethic, and the disparate coaching styles of Glen Hanlon, Bruce Cassidy, and Ron Wilson– some very interesting opinions on that one.
They also talk about like 73 other topics. It’s a very long, very good interview.

On a crisp Thursday night in Arlington, Virginia, a bunch of former Washington Capitals got together for the team’s first annual intersquad alumni game. Featuring players flying in from as far away as Sweden (Bengt Gustavsson) and Montana (Brendan Witt), the old Caps engaged in a spirited contest. In the end, team red prevailed 6-4 in the shootout.
The Caps have ramped the visibility in recent years, starting with the 2011 Winter Classic alumni game against the Penguins. Now, though, the quality of the players participating is much improved, featuring a Hall of Fame member and a few All Stars. Granted, most of the elite players are part of the team’s current coaching staff (Adam Oates, Olie Kolzig, and Calle Johansson), but Peter Bondra, Rod Langway, Yvon Labre, and even Kevin Kaminski also participated.

Everyone hates Mike Milbury. Fans, bloggers, and apparently former Washington Capitals co-captain Brendan Witt, who said Milbury “sucks ass” when he opined on the GM-cum-NBC broadcaster via Twitter. Milbury is, of course, infamous with Caps fans. He’s criticized the team many times, once referring to them as the “Crapitals.”
Milbury, general manger of the New York Islanders from 1995-2006, traded away Zdeno Chara, Roberto Luongo, and Olli Jokinen. He drafted chronically-injured Rick DiPietro over Dany Heatley and Marian Gaborik. One time, he attacked someone with a shoe.
Witt signed with the Islanders just weeks after Milbury was fired, and it seems he’s not a fan — at least not after Milbury’s intermission thoughts during Sunday’s Pens-Sabres game.
