TSN Insider, the semi-retired Bob McKenzie, reported early Tuesday morning that “WSH is the clear frontrunner” to sign Henrik Lundqvist. Lundqvist, 38, was bought out by the New York Rangers last week.
McKenzie added that Lundqvist’s contract should be “a short-term, bargain contract.”
Chris Kreider is in the final season of a four-year, $18.5 million contract ($4.63 cap hit) that he originally signed in July 2016. The New York Rangers are currently negotiating with the 28-year-old Kreider on a new deal, but if that doesn’t work out, the team will most likely move the sturdy forward before the February 24 trade deadline.
According to NHL insider Bob McKenzie, the Capitals are one of at least five teams that are seriously talking to the Rangers about landing Kreider, who has scored 20 or more goals in five of his last six seasons.
McKenzie revealed the news on NBCSN.
Capitals goaltender and restricted free agent Philipp Grubauer wants to be a starting goaltender in the NHL and the Capitals are willing to trade him so that he can accomplish that feat. Now what exactly the Capitals could get in return and which team exactly he will end up on is still a mystery.
Friday morning, TSN’s Bob Mckenzie did an interview on TSN1050 and stated that the Capitals believe they can secure a first round pick for Grubauer.

According to TSN’s Bob McKenzie, the Capitals may not be done tinkering.
Wednesday, TSN’s Bob McKenzie served as an analyst on NBCSN’s pre and postgame coverage of its nationally televised game between the Washington Capitals and Chicago Blackhawks.
During a segment with Kathryn Tappen at the end of the night, McKenzie shared some inside information around the NHL, which included a bit about pending unrestricted free agent John Carlson.
The defenseman’s six-year, $23.8 million contract ($3.96M cap hit) that he originally signed in 2012 expires this July. If Carlson does not re-sign, he could become one of the most popular players on the free-agent market.
Fans aren’t the only ones who (begrudgingly) think that this might finally be the Caps’ year – almost a third of NHL coaches think so too.
Hockey Hall of Fame journalist Bob McKenzie released his annual midseason coaches poll on Monday. Of the 25 bench bosses who responded, 15 of the coaches believe the Caps will play in the Stanley Cup final, and 10 believe that the Caps will hoist Lord Stanley.

If there’s one person who truly is an insider of the NHL, it’s TSN’s Bob McKenzie. While speaking on Montreal’s TSN 690 Monday, McKenzie spoke about the future of Capitals defenseman Mike Green. He believes the UFA will dealt by GM Brian MacLellan before the NHL’s trade deadline March 2nd.

Bob McKenzie of The Sports Network is hockey’s version of a public intellectual; his thoughts matter concretely to the game. On Sunday night he took to Twitter to address Alex Ovechkin’s hit on Zbynek Michalek and possible discipline that may follow from it. We won’t call it “supplemental” discipline, because there was no primary discipline– although there certainly should have been.
