Washington Spirit, featuring star rookie Trinity Rodman, play first home game with fans since 2019

Just as the Capitals were allowing fans back into their home arena on Tuesday night, across town, the NWSL’s Washington Spirit were doing the same. The Spirit welcomed its home crowd back in the stands for the first time since 2019. Over 2,000 fans dotted the stands of Audi Field in socially-distanced groups as the Spirit faced off in a scoreless draw against NJ/NY Gotham FC (formerly Sky Blue FC).

Washington Spirit sets new franchise record for attendance at sold-out Audi Field

After the USWNT’s gold-medal triumph during the 2019 World Cup, the question that remained was whether women’s soccer would be able to capitalize on the huge popularity it saw this summer. On Saturday, August 24, the Washington Spirit answered the question of what that success could look like in the NWSL.

The Washington Spirit sold out every seat in DC’s Audi Field, with 19,871 in attendance, smashing their previous franchise record for attendance (7,976) by over double. The team’s usual home stadium, Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Maryland, tops out at around 5,500.

Why you have to be part of the new D.C. United experience at Audi Field

Saturday afternoon, D.C. United invited RMNB to their sold-out home game against Los Angeles FC — the top team in the Western Conference. With the Capitals having already clinched their playoff seeding in the Metropolitan Division earlier in the week, I decided to take the day off from covering the Capitals to enjoy a sunny afternoon at the new Audi Field.

The game marked the first professional soccer game I’ve ever attended despite United playing its first game in 1996.

I honestly had no idea what to expect, but by the end of the day, one thing was for sure: I would definitely be coming back in the future.

The gameplay and the team’s new stadium were big reasons why.
