Ovechkin scored the goal via a wicked one-timer from the left circle while both teams skated five-on-five. Avs’ goaltender Alexandar Georgiev surrendered the goal.
The tally was Ovechkin’s 811th of his career.

The New York Rangers are the Washington Capitals’ final opponent of the season and the result of the regular-season finale will have major implications on whether they meet again in the playoffs or not. If the Caps can take two points from the Rangers and the Columbus Blue Jackets beat the Pittsburgh Penguins in regulation, this will be a preview of a first-round series.
According to NHL.com’s Dan Rosen, forwards Artemi Panarin and Andrew Copp will be sitting the fixture out as they recover from nagging injuries. Rosen also reports that potential Hart Trophy finalist, goaltender Igor Shesterkin will be sitting on the bench as backup to Alexandar Georgiev.

Washington’s 3-2 shootout win over the New York Rangers was a mixed affair. The Ovechkin line struggled as depth players shined. And in net for New York, Alexandar Georgiev put forth a remarkable effort to force overtime and the shootout.
And that’s when it got weird. This was one of the strangest endings to a Caps game in memory.

The Henrik Lundqvist-less New York Rangers are currently going through a rebuild, and Monday night at Madison Square Garden, the Capitals took several young Rags players to school.
The Capitals scored four times in the first period, taking advantage of a hole-y defense and poor goaltending. Alexandar Georgiev was pulled in favor of Ondrej Pavelec after giving up three goals in the first 8:54 of the game.
