Alex Ovechkin is the best, and his first period goal against the Rangers is reason #844 why.
In addition to being a pretty goal, it is a weird goal.
Four minutes into the third period, Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin nearly tied the game with a brilliant individual effort. After getting a perfect pass from Troy Brouwer, Ovechkin churned his legs and went solo against Oilers defenseman Justin Schultz.
Schultz had plenty of space and read Ovi perfectly– at least at first. But when you reach with your stick against one of the greats instead of taking the body, you might get burned.

So much happened Tuesday night during the Caps/Sharks game that it was impossible to cover it all. Liam O’Brien tallied his first NHL point, the Caps came back like two different times from an impossible deficit, and terrible hockey player John Scott summoned the power of Thor to lower the boom and score his first goal since dinosaurs roamed the earth.
There was another play I loved that I didn’t get to cover. DID YOU SEE THAT ‘AND ONE’ MOVE OVI PUT ON LOGAN COUTURE??? OMGGGGGG.
Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin has unrivaled puck skills. So much so that juggling the puck has become easy for him. In years past, Ovechkin would pull the move off only in All-Star Game breakaway challenges. Now he’s using the move in games and has even scored with it.
Saturday, Ovechkin juggled the puck again, this time after his and Patrice Bergeron’s sticks knocked the puck air-borne in the neutral zone.
The Washington Capitals looked like they were about to go 0 for 2 on the power play to start the second period. Unable to gain the zone until late in their second man advantage, the Caps eventually got some traffic in front of the net, but it wasn’t going in.
The puck rebounded behind Carey Price’s net and it seemed the play was over. But then Alex Ovechkin put all those juggling skills he’s practicing to use. He grabbed the puck mid-air, brought it back to the front of the net, and put it behind Price to open up scoring.

Despite the Washington Capitals coming out and laying an egg for the second straight game last night, there were some positive moments. Granted 95% of those moments were authored by Matt Hendricks, but dammit they were there if you looked really closely.
For example, let’s examine a rush up the ice by Alex Ovechkin in the third period. The Russian Machine, who finished with an assist and four shots, did not score a goal for the second straight game, but he sure did have the sickest move on the night.
