Dmitry Orlov authored his first SCOARLOV of the 2019 IIHF World Championship in Russia’s 3-1 win over Latvia on Saturday.
Capitals forward Dmitrij Jaskin was inches away from scoring a hat trick in the Czech Republic’s 8-0 beatdown of Italy.
Jaskin scored the Czech Republic’s fifth and seventh goals and also registered a primary assist on a fluke tally by Radko Gudas.
“Well, you know, it’s always nice to score,” Jaskin said after the game. “It finally came. Everybody is going to feel a little better about themselves after the game.”
The Czech Republic improved to 4-1 in the tournament and are tied for first in Group B.
Capitals forward Jakub Vrana scored his third goal of the World Championship against Latvia on Thursday.
After falling behind 2-0, the Czech Republic scored four unanswered goals in the second period, which included Vrana’s tally with 1:20 remaining in the stanza.
V showed off some great hand-eye coordination on the goal.
Alex Ovechkin is one of the greatest forwards of all-time. His alter ego, Ovi The Goalie, is no slouch either.
Wednesday, during Team Russia’s 10-0 trouncing of Italy, Ovechkin saved one of his teammates from a potentially gnarly face wound by gloving a stray puck at the bench.

One reason why the World Championship can be fun is the awkward situations it creates. For example, on Monday, Russia played the Czech Republic, pitting five Capitals teammates against each other. The Caps troika of Alex Ovechkin, Evgeny Kuznetsov, and Dmitry Orlov suited up for the red machine while Jakub Vrana and Dmitrij Jaskin donned white and blue for the Czechs. It went exactly how you would predict.
“[P]ersonally I was trying not to let [Ovechkin] get in my head,” Jakub Vrana said in a Czech TV interview as translated by Alexandra Petakova. “He was trying to provoke me a bit and make me lose focus on my game, but I was more trying to concentrate on my game to help the team the best I could and I didn’t want to allow myself to be distracted.”
After the game was over, the Caps opponents high fived and hugged each other in the handshake line, letting bygones be bygones. Ovechkin even gave Jaskin a respectful tap to the calves from his stick.
“Well, as for me, he’s my captain and I respect him a great deal, but when we play against each other, we are opponents and you can’t consider the season,” Vrana said, seemingly conflicted. “He might be my captain, but right now we’re opponents.”
Vrana’s TV interview is translated below.

Jakub Vrana was the best player on the ice in the Czech Republic’s surprising 5-2 throttling of Team Sweden. The Capitals forward scored twice, including a memorable goal on his first career World Championship shift. His second goal, a breath-taking breakaway tally, clinched the game for the Czechs.
Sweden had won 17 consecutive World-Championship games coming into Friday.
Jakub Vrana had a career year in Washington, scoring 24 goals and tallying 47 points in 82 games. Vrana’s scintillating season is continuing in Bratislava.
Vrana scored on his first career shift with the senior Czech Republic national team, beating Henrik Lundqvist on a one-timer.
The young Czech forward was named to the national team on April 29 along with Capitals forward Dmitrij Jaskin. Vrana did not play in any of the tuneup Carlson Hockey Games, potentially nursing a nagging injury.

Capitals center Lars Eller will indeed play in the 2019 IIHF World Championship after showing passive interest last week during his breakdown day interview in Washington.
The Capitals announced Eller’s participation in a press release Thursday morning.
Eller will join five other Capitals players overseas in Slovakia, including Russians Alex Ovechkin, Evgeny Kuznetsov, and Dmitry Orlov as well as Czechs Jakub Vrana and Dmitrij Jaskin.
How do you know the Capitals’ season is really over? Alex Ovechkin is no longer on the same continent as you and me.
Monday and Tuesday, Ovi, his wife Nastya, and son Sergei packed up their things, drove to Dulles Airport, and flew to Russia ahead of the 2019 IIHF World Championship.
Nicklas Backstrom and Andre Burakovsky will not represent Sweden at the upcoming IIHF World Championship tournament in Slovakia, the Swedish Ice Hockey Association announced on Tuesday.
In the Swedish national team’s release of their roster, both Backstrom and Burakovsky have “injury” listed as their reasons for declining the invitation.
