Nicklas Backstrom mentored Capitals prospect Connor McMichael during Training Camp

Capitals prospect Connor McMichael is having a breakout season. Not only did he secure gold with Team Canada at 2020 World Junior Championship over the winter break, but he’s also racking up goals and points with the London Knights of the OHL at a blistering pace, including four hat tricks.

As it turns out, McMichael also has a very important mentor on the Capitals roster: recently re-signed star centerman Nicklas Backstrom.

Capitals head coach Todd Reirden revealed the influence that Backstrom had had on McMichael when speaking to the media following practice at MedStar Capitals Iceplex on Wednesday.

Hershey Bears announce 2019 Training Camp schedule

On Thursday, the Hershey Bears announced the full schedule for their 2019 Training Camp. All of the Bears’ practices will be free and open to the public. The AHL 2019-20 regular season kicks off on October 5th for the Bears, against rivals Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

During the 2018-19 season, the Hershey Bears went on a historic point streak that led to career seasons for several players. They qualified for the 2019 Calder Cup playoffs after missing them for only the 13th time in their 80-year history during the 2017-18 season, but were ultimately bounced in the second round by the Charlotte Checkers.

With several new additions to the squad, including veteran Matt Moulson, as well as key returning pieces from the Bear’s successful 2018-19 season, they will be looking to recapture that same success and improve on it as they head into the new season.

Alex Alexeyev doubtful for start of Capitals Training Camp

After taking a high, dirty hit from Predators defenseman Josh Healey at the 2019 NHL Prospect Showcase, Alex Alexeyev is being held out of the start of practices at the Capitals’ Training Camp.

According to The Washington Post’s Isabelle Khurshudyan, this is due to an upper-body injury/concussion. Following the hit, which occurred during the Capitals 3-2 loss to the Predators, Alexeyev did not return to the game nor play in the final outing of the Showcase, though Hershey Bears head coach Spencer Carberry said at the time, “We took him out of the game for precautionary reasons to make sure. He had to go through the [concussion] protocol, and everything was good.”
