Being selected as an All-Star is an enormous honor for any NHL player, but Brian Boyle’s selection as an All-Star for the New Jersey Devils is arguably the most heartwarming of any this season. After a tumultuous start to his first season as a Devil and months filled of personal ups and downs since, Boyle’s participation in the All-Star Game is the culmination of a journey of perseverance.

Barry Trotz won a Coach’s Challenge in the All-Star Game. Wes McCauley announced the disallowed goal in epic fashion.

As soon as it was revealed that Wes McCauley would be one of the referees in the 2018 All-Star Game, hockey fans hoped that there would be a goal review so the dramatic official could show off his mic skills.

They got their wish.

Puck-tossing Alex Ovechkin continues to be the Santa Claus of hockey

Friday night during the All-Star Skills Competition, Alex Ovechkin asked four-year-old Jonas Smailys to join him on the ice during warmups. Life = made.

Fast forward to the All-Star Game, Ovechkin found a tiny Caps fan in the crowd wearing light blue headphones.

Ovi thought the fan deserved a souvenir. And he delivered.

Alex Ovechkin and Braden Holtby take photo together before 2018 All-Star Game

The Washington Capitals are being represented at the 2018 NHL All-Star Game by two of the franchise’s most beloved players.

Alex Ovechkin, who was voted in as captain of the Metropolitan Division All-Stars, is in Tampa participating in his franchise-record ninth NHL All-Star Game while goaltender Braden Holtby has been nominated to three-straight games.

Sunday, before the three-on-three tournament began, the Russian machine and the Holtbeast took a photo together for Capitals social media.

Barry Trotz to play Alex Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby on same line again during All-Star Game

Alex Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby were once bitter rivals. Now, according to Ovechkin, they’re “best friends”. And Sunday, the two future Hall of Famers will skate together on the same line again during the 2018 NHL All-Star Game.

Metropolitan Division head coach Barry Trotz announced the move on NHL Network.

Gary Bettman to reclarify goaltender interference, talks Seattle expansion at All-Star press conference

Several years ago, the NHL introduced goal reviews for goaltender interference. The league’s heart was in the right place with the new challenges, but officials’ determinations for what is and isn’t goaltender interference has varied widely. Lately, several overturned goal calls have caused exasperation and heartburn for many coaches, players, and fans.

Mike Smith’s kids drop the gloves, fight at family skate during All-Star Weekend

Sibling rivalry is real.

As Mike Smith warmed up for the 2018 All-Star Skills Competition, his four boys Aksel, Ajax, Nixon, and Kingsley skated around the Amalie Arena ice. The family skate was going fine until Nixon, potentially angry that his brother put his finger in his cereal during breakfast, dropped the gloves with Aksel.

NHL All-Stars interact with puppies, parrots, and pirates

All-Star Weekend is a serious event that showcases the game’s best players. But it hasn’t been all business down in Tampa.

As players arrived in Tampa on Friday and participated in Media Day on Saturday, the players were greeted by puppies and a giant parrot.

Also: pirates. Did we mention pirates?

Braden Holtby questions NHL’s system for picking All Stars after John Carlson snub

Saturday was Media Day at the 2018 All-Star Weekend, and when Capitals goaltender Braden Holtby took the podium, he kept it real.

Holtby, who is making his third straight All-Star appearance, called his nomination “less expected” and said that “there’s a couple teammates that should be here instead of me.”

Alex Ovechkin will compete for Hardest Shot in the 2018 All-Star Skills Competition

Saturday afternoon, the NHL announced the player assignments for the All-Star Skills Competition.

Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin, captain of the Metropolitan Division All-Stars, will compete in the Hardest Shot competition. According to the NHL, all six events of the 2018 Skills Competition will be individual competitions, with the winner of each event earning $25,000.

The event will tonight at 7 PM at AMALIE Arena, home of the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Details, rules and participants for all six events of the 2018 GEICO NHL All-Star Skills Competition are listed below.
