Braden Holtby Thinks Evgeny Kuznetsov Could Be ‘a Top-Five Player In This League’

Wednesday night, Evgeny Kuznetsov scored his sixth goal and second OTGWG of the season. In front of his idol Pavel Datsyuk, Kuznetsov went one-on-three and beat Petr Mrazek on a brilliant individual play. Kuznetsov, who was second in the league in points a few weeks ago, still leads the Caps as a team (18).

Braden Holtby, rarely overstated or hyperbolic, had high praise for Kuznetsov when he spoke with flesh-colored cucumber Pierre McGuire after the game.

Wednesday night, the Capitals played in another maddening, low-scoring game game against the Red Wings. Lucky for the Caps, Evgeny Kuznetsov, Quidditch beater club in hand, was again the overtime hero.

Great Goaltending: Caps beat Red Wings 2-1 (OT)

Despite all recent evidence to the contrary, the Washington Capitals are still a hockey team. But Wednesday’s game against the Detroit Red Wings, the first Caps game since the mid 80s, intimated that the Caps may have diminished in intensity during their long break.

They looked particularly a bit rusty in the early going, especially in comparison to Pavel Datsyuk and Dylan Larkin, who combined for the Wings’ first goal. But on one of their 275 first period power plays, the Caps returned fire with a tip-in by Justin Williams.

No one scored forever, so we went to overtime, where Kuznetsov won it.

Caps beat Wings 2-1 in overtime!

Braden Holtby Makes Incredible Stick Save At Goal Line (Video)

Braden Holtby just made the save of the night and maybe the Caps’ save of the season. After denying a shot from the point, Holtby stopped Darren Helm’s rebound attempt on the door step, sweeping away the puck out at the goal line.

Having not played since Michael Scott was still on The Office, the Caps finally get back in action Wednesday night against the Red Wings. It’s been a while so you may be a little stiff. Stretch it out, Caps fans.

The Caps and Wings met last week. The Caps 5v5 effort was pretty meh, but the Wings overall have been a meh team so far in 2015-16. Detroit has been playing better hockey lately, as they’ve been the better possession team in each of their past five games, but they picked only two wins in that span.

The Caps need a better 5v5 performance. Oh, and I dare the Wings to let Ovechkin fire 4,307 shots again. If they employ the same strategy, you can take an Ovechkin record-setting goal to #thebank.

Puck drop is at 8 PM on NBCSN.

Evgeny Kuznetsov Will Play Against His Idol, Pavel Datsyuk, Tonight

Ever since the Capitals drafted Evgeny Kuznetsov in the 2010 draft, the young Russian has tried to emulate Russian NHL superstars. One of those superstars is 37-year-old magic man Pavel Datsyuk, whom Kuznetsov will face tonight in Detroit.
