During his young career, Jakub Vrana has sometimes battled a narrative that he takes plays/games off, but I’d argue that he’s actually the ultimate team player and we should cherish him like an adorable baby pig.
Sunday in Calgary, Vrana scored the Capitals’ only goal (which was cool don’t get me wrong), but it was his long, passionate hug of Philipp Grubauer that I appreciated the most.
The Washington Capitals are coming home after a troubled, early-season road trip through Canada that found them sick, injured, and tired. Hoping to take a win in their last of three games, the Caps instead got stymied by the Calgary Flames, who dominated play and generated chances.
The Caps survived a scoreless first, but early in the second Michael Ferland dropped a pass to Brett Kulak and then redirected his shot for a goal. The Flames failed a clear early in the third, and Jakub Vrana turned that into a tying goal. Calgary got the lead back courtesy of Johnny Goudreau, who undressed Dmitry Orlov and set up Sean Monahan perfectly on a play entirely of his devising.
Flames beat Caps 2-1.

After a bleh start, the Capitals actually mounted a convincing effort to down the Oilers in Edmonton Saturday. They’ll hope to do it again tonight in Calgary, the final game in what’s been a challenging early-season road trip.

The Capitals went to Edmonton coming off of a very poor showing in Vancouver looking for a big two road points. They got those two points in a 5-2 victory over the Oilers on the backs of some great goaltending and some unlikely scoring sources.
The Oilers out attempted the Capitals 62 to 53 at five-on-five and outshot the Capitals 40 to 31. Some of that shot discrepancy can be explained by the four power plays the Oilers had to the Caps zero.
