John Carlson Really Wanted Michal Neuvirth’s Attention in the Handshake Line

On Sunday after the Caps closed out the Flyers, Braden Holtby and Michal Neuvirth had a moment in the handshake line. Shaking his head in admiration, Holtby gave a big high-five and a pat on the shoulder to his former long-time teammate and rival. Neuvirth finished the series with a .981 save percentage, giving up only two goals in three games.

Caps defenseman John Carlson also had a moment with Neuvirth in the handshake line, though he had to do a lot of jersey tugging to get his attention. Carlson and Neuvirth grew up together in the AHL before both landing in the NHL.

Flyers Fans Surprisingly Did Not Stay Classy During Game Six

The Flyers organization tried. As fans entered Wells Fargo Center for Game Six Sunday, they received shirts featuring PA Announcer Lou Nolan and the words “Stay Classy, Philly!” I know you may be shocked to hear this, but Flyers fans did not stay classy.

Alex Ovechkin Ran On His Skates After Nicklas Backstrom’s Goal

Alex Ovechkin is one of the best hockey players in the world because of his size, conditioning, and talent, but Ovechkin’s intense desire to win is just as important. Capitals fans have seen Ovechkin’s passion ever since his first goal against the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2005. As he’s gotten older, Ovechkin’s enthusiasm has grown to include his teammates’ accomplishments as well.

Sunday afternoon at Wells Fargo Center gave us another great example of Ovi reveling in his allies’ victories. After Nicklas Backstrom scored in the second period to give the Caps a 1-0 lead, Ovechkin celebrated with a hop and a running man. Like Ovi was literally sprinting on a slippery surface with skate blades.

Braden Holtby Was So Impressed With Michal Neuvirth in the Handshake Line

Braden Holtby was mind-blowingly sensational against the Flyers, giving up only five goals in six first-round games (more on that later). But after the Caps won the series, all Holtby could do was praise Michal Neuvirth.

When talking to NBCSN’s Joe Micheletti, Holtby was asked if anything in this series surprised him.

“No, not really,” Holtby said before naming some things that surprised him. “We were probably a little surprised to be up 3-0. [The Flyers] were playing some pretty good hockey too. We know they’re a very good hockey team. It was a testament when Neuvy came in and played as good as you could conceivably play. We still stuck with it and found a way to win.”

Neuvirth stopped 103 of 105 shots in Games Four through Six after serving as Steve Mason’s back-up in the first three games.

Caps Babies Unite to Support Their Fathers (Photo)

This photo should win an award. The Caps wives and girlfriends gathered their babies and toddlers together to watch Game Six. The kids – Stella Alzner, Lyla Oshie, Lucca Carlson, Haley Backstrom, and a few others – were dressed in Caps attire and sat on the couch. I’m pretty sure this is the sole reason why the Caps won.

The Caps Celebrate Making the Second Round

Holtby: engulfed by a sea of love.

After taking a commanding 3-0 series lead, the Capitals finally closed out their first-round series with the Philadelphia Flyers in Game Six. Nicklas Backstrom scored the game’s only goal and Braden Holtby posted his fourth career postseason shutout in front of Flyers fans at Wells Fargo Center.

As the final seconds waned, Karl Alzner raised his stick high in the air. Holtby and Alzner exchanged fist bumps. Then the Caps engulfed their goalie with a huge group hug in the crease.

Done, Done, Onto the Next One: Caps beat Flyers 1-0

Well, don’t we all feel like silly gooses. Turns out the Capitals are capable of closing out a series in under seven games after all. With a nailbiting win over the Flyers in Philadelphia, the Caps advance to the next round.

We were scoreless until the midway mark, when Nick Backstrom scored a rush goal on Michal Neuvirth. That was it. That’s all it took.

Caps beat Flyers 1-0! Caps win the series 4-2! Braden Holtby records the shutout!

Brayden Schenn’s Head Shot Against TJ Oshie

In a series full of questionable, intent-to-injure plays, Flyers forward Brayden Schenn just delivered a head shot on TJ Oshie, the same man he fought at the beginning of Game Five.

During a race for a loose puck, Alex Ovechkin and Andrew MacDonald battled for the puck. Oshie gathered it and was charged by Schenn. Schenn raised his arms and hit Oshie in the left side of the head.

The Washington Capitals have finally scored on Michal Neuvirth. For the first time since Game Five, the Caps have found the back of the net– Nick Backstrom‘s shot off Johansson’s pass on the rush.

Watch the Capitals Get Utterly Screwed by Two Bad Calls

The referees in Sunday’s Game Six lost their damn minds. In the span of five seconds, Officials Dan O’Halloran and Ian Walsh blew two calls, resulting in a four-minute power play for Philly plus two minutes of 5v3.

They were bad calls.
