The Washington Capitals are still a mess. They let Mika Zibanejad score on them five times and lost to the New York Rangers 6-5 in overtime.
The Rangers out-shot the Caps 39 to 34 and out-attempted them at five-on-five 42 to 36.

The Washington Capitals had another deflating loss – this time losing to the New York Rangers 6-5 in overtime after Mika Zibanejad scored five goals.
Lost in the shuffle was another clutch performance by Alex Ovechkin who nearly scored the Caps out of trouble.
Ovechkin first tallied late in the third period to tie the game at 4 before scoring again with 43 seconds left to send it to overtime, giving the Capitals a standing point they did not deserve.
The goals were Ovechkin’s 704th and 705th of his Hall of Fame career.
Thursday night against the Capitals, Mika Zibanejad became the fifth Swedish born player ever to score five goals in an NHL game.
Zibanejad scored once in the first period, once in the second period, twice in the third period, and the game-winner in overtime. Two of Zibanejad’s goals came on the powerplay where his one-timer is accurate and hard just like Alex Ovechkin’s.
Since the All-Star Break, Zibanejad has scored 20 goals – more than any other NHL player.

The Washington Capitals are 14-15-1 in their last 30 games (under .500) and have given up three-plus goals in ten straight games.
Wednesday, 24 hours after losing to the Flyers 5-2, the Capitals lost in overtime to the New York Rangers 6-5 after Mika Zibanejad scored his fifth goal of the game.
Capitals head coach Todd Reirden spoke to the media afterward and answered three questions. Reirden was asked nuanced things by reporters but used the opportunity to speak broadly about the team’s struggles.

The Washington Capitals played another chippy, sloppy, error-prone game, blowing a winnable game against the New York Rangers and nearly losing control of the Metropolitan Division in the process.
Carl Hagelin kicked off scoring with a goal against his former team. Mika Zibanejad, whose name you will hear a few times here, responded with a power-play goal in the first, then a delayed-penalty goal in the second period. Ilya Kovalchuk’s first goal tied the game, setting off a scoring spurt. Tony Deangelo put the Rangers up after a great pass from Panarin, but Garnet Hathaway scored soon after– deflecting a shot by Michal Kempny on a similar play.
Twelve seconds into the third period, Mika Zibanejad secured a hat trick and gave the Rangers a new lead. Alex Ovechkin tied it up yet again with a lovely wristshot with ten minutes to go. The Caps committed a billion penalties late in the game with the score tied, so Zibanejad got his fourth goal. In the final minute of regulation, Ovechkin found a rebound to tie the game yet again.
Overtime was over in a blink as Zibanejad won it with his fifth goal of the game.

We’re shaking yesterday off. Today is a new day. Thursday is always a better day than a Wednesday. The Capitals have traveled north to play the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden. Truly hoping that the Caps show up in a mood that doesn’t involve the penalty box.
