The Washington Capitals will not want to talk about the first ten minutes of their game against the Ottawa Senators, but the latter fifty where they scored seven unanswered goals to win the game 7-2? That’s what we like to see.
The Caps out-shot the Sens 37 to 23.

The Washington Capitals had an embarrassing start against the NHL’s very worst team. The Ottawa Senators, who traded Mark Stone (Vegas), Matt Duchene (Columbus) and Ryan Dzingel (Columbus) ahead of Monday’s trade deadline, scored twice in the first 7:16 of the game, not allowing the Caps a shot on goal for nearly the first 10 minutes of the game (9:53, Andre Burakovsky). Yiiiiikes.
The Capitals responded by scoring seven unanswered goals, including four joker tallies in the second period.
What turned the game around? “Well, we decided as a group we’re going to get engaged in the game,” Capitals assistant coach Scott Arniel said, failing to hide his sarcasm. “We were spectators there for the first ten, fifteen minutes. You know what? In this league, if you don’t put the work in, those things are going to happen. But you saw what happened here. We got a little ticked off and got some goals.”
Yes, yes they did. And now I will recap them all for you.
The Washington Capitals played their first post-trade-deadline game at home on Tuesday, hosting the suddenly decapitated Ottawa Senators to a messy, goal-packed hour of hockey.
Here’s where I guess I’m gonna do a goal recap. This’ll be fun. Okay, here goes: Oscar Lindberg scored his first goal for Ottawa capping off a heavy shift for the Sens. Anthony Duclair then notched a power-play goal in his second game for the team, putting the Caps in a two-goal hole early against a weak team.
Oh no, y’all.
JK, watch this.
Then top-line Tom Wilson scored on a bump-set pass from Ovechkin, then Eller scored on a pass from Orlov, then John Carlson got a PPG from high in the slot, then Oshie used some level-six wizard cantrips to put Brooks Orpik’s rebound in the net, then Oshie did it again. That was all before the second intermission. Kuznetsov made it a touchdown early in the third. Both teams went through the motions for the last 19 minutes.
Caps win.

The Washington Capitals held Black History in Hockey Night at Capital One Arena on Tuesday.
Hockey Hall of Famer Willie O’Ree, the NHL’s first black player, was joined on the ice by civil-rights pioneer and United States Representative John Lewis (D-Ga.) for the ceremonial puck drop. O’Ree and Lewis both sported red Capitals jerseys for the occasion. O’Ree wore his own number 22, while Lewis, according to the Associated Press’s Stephen Whyno, wore number 65 in honor of the Selma to Montgomery March from 1965.
After their introduction by PA announcer Wes Johnson, O’Ree and Lewis received a reverent ovation from the DC crowd.
