The Washington Capitals are still a very bad hockey team right now. Since late December they’ve been barely a .500 club and that rough stretched continued Thursday night as they dropped a 4-3 decision to the Montreal Canadiens in overtime.
The shots at the end of the night were locked at 32, but the Habs out-attempted the Caps at five-on-five 58 to 44.

The struggling Washington Capitals welcomed both new blueline addition Brenden Dillon and the Montreal Canadiens to town on Thursday night. The former will hopefully stabilize what has been a very inconsistent defensive unit of late.
Alex Ovechkin put a rolling puck past Carey Price to open scoring. Shea Weber tied things up from the point with a slapshot. Lars Eller burned his former team again before Brendan Gallagher’s quick response strike locked things up once more. Ben Chiarot gave the Habs their first lead of the night.
Tom Wilson with 20 seconds left tied the game with Holtby pulled. Chiarot with the OT winner.
Canadiens beat Caps 4-3.

Alex Ovechkin is now one goal shy of 700. With a set play off an offensive-zone faceoff, Ovechkin scored goal 699 against Carey Price.
(Well, he hasn’t scored all 699 against Price, just 22, but you know what we meant.)

The Washington Capitals come into Thursday night action against the Montreal Canadiens having lost five of their seven games in the month of February. A western road trip saw the Caps comeback to beat Colorado, but lose two in a row to the Coyotes and Golden Knights. It’s time to bust this slump.
