Boone Jenner and Vincent Desharnais, two of the Capitals’ biggest free-agent signings, have selected their jersey numbers for the upcoming season.

Jenner will wear number 22 and Desharnais number 73, the team announced Monday afternoon.

Bonne Jenner

Jenner had previously only worn the number 38 during his 13 seasons with the Columbus Blue Jackets. However, with Rasmus Sandin holding down the digits in Washington, Jenner was forced to switch.

This will not be Jenner’s first time sporting number 22, however, as he wore the number in juniors during his four seasons in the OHL with the Oshawa Generals. Before making it to the NHL, Jenner also wore number 36 in the AHL.

Jenner becomes the 24th player in Capitals history to don the twos, picking up the digits right from Brandon Duhaime, who wore 22 for two seasons in DC before signing with the Toronto Maple Leafs this offseason. The number was first worn during the franchise’s second season by Ron Lalonde, who rocked it from 1975 to 1979. More recently, 22 has appeared on the backs of Johan Larsson (2022), Lucas Johansen (2022), Madison Bowey (2018-19), Kevin Shattenkirk (2017), Curtis Glencross (2015), Mike Knuble (2010-12), Rico Fata (2007), Boyd Kane (2006), Anson Carter (2004), and Steve Konowalchuk (1993-2004).

Vincent Desharnais

Desharnais is returning to his original NHL number, 73. He wore 73 with the Edmonton Oilers from 2022-24 (including his first NHL season) and with the Canucks for the first part of the 2024-25 season. He also wore number 7 on the Pittsburgh Penguins during the 2024-25 campaign. Last year, he wore jersey number 5 with the San Jose Sharks after joining the team the prior season.

The 30-year-old defender has also worn jersey numbers 6 in the AHL and 25 and 23 in the ECHL. During his four years at Providence College, he sported the number 2.

Desharnais will be just the second Capital ever to wear jersey number 73. Connor Sheary is the only other player to do so, wearing the digits from 2021 to 2023.
