Cole Hutson scores overtime game-winning goal in Boston University’s 3-2 victory over Merrimack

Cole Hutson continues to prove he’s one of the most dynamic players in college hockey.

Friday, the 19-year-old defenseman delivered a 3-2 victory for Boston University after rifling home a wicked wrist shot in overtime against Merrimack.

After receiving a pass from Gavin McCarthy in the neutral zone, Hutson weaved his way into Merrimack’s zone during 3-on-3 overtime. He then cut towards the middle of the ice and ripped a shot past goaltender Max Lundgren from near the top of the right faceoff circle.

“Tonight it was up and down,” Hutson told Boston Hockey Blog postgame. “There were shades of how good we could be, some shades of how poorly we’ve been playing. We got to find a way to keep it even keel.”

Hutson, playing his sophomore season at BU, now has 14 points (4g, 10a) in 10 games this season, which leads the Terriers. He is also the highest-scoring defenseman in the nation, one point ahead of Minnesota-Duluth blueliner Ty Hanson.

The 2024 second-round pick by the Washington Capitals is now on a five-game point streak, where he has recorded eight points (2g, 6a). Among all NCAA players, Hutson ranks tied for 11th in overall scoring with fellow NHL draft picks Austin Burnevik, Justin Poirier, and Stiven Sardarian, as well as the consensus number-one overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, Penn State’s Gavin McKenna.

Hutson, who is averaging 23:07 time on ice per game, has also fired 42 shots on goal, which is tied for the sixth most in college hockey. He was recently named the National Defender of the Month for October.

The Terriers, ranked 12th in the nation, are just 4-5-1 to start the 2025-26 season, with Friday night’s win their first since October 25th against UConn. They’ll be back in action against Merrimack on Saturday night.
