The Washington Capitals have enacted a little payback on the Winnipeg Jets via the waiver wire.
After the Jets claimed goaltender Clay Stevenson off waivers from the Capitals last month, the Caps have returned the favor by doing the same with defenseman Jack St. Ivany on Saturday.
St. Ivany arrives in DC as the Capitals need another right-shot defenseman after Vincent Desharnais recently underwent an appendectomy surgery that will keep him out of the lineup for the next 4 to 6 weeks. With Desharnais and Rasmus Sandin on the shelf, the Caps were operating with just six healthy defenders before claiming St. Ivany.
The 27-year-old St. Ivany has played 57 career NHL games, with all but four coming with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He has nine career points, all assists, since he debuted with the Penguins on March 22, 2024.
Winnipeg acquired the former fourth-round pick from Pittsburgh this past summer, sending the Penguins forward David Gustafsson back in return. In four games for the Jets this year, St. Ivany has played 15:29 of average ice time per game.
St. Ivany, signed through this season at an $850k cap hit, is another big blueliner, standing 6-foot-4 and weighing 197 pounds. In his short stint with the Jets, the club owned 51.2 percent of the scoring chances and 55.6 percent of the high-danger chances with him on the ice at five-on-five.
Before making his pro debut in 2022, St. Ivany played four years of college hockey with Yale University and Boston College. With the Eagles, he played under current Capitals development coach Brooks Orpik, who was an assistant at BC. He was also teammates with Caps forward Anthony Beauvillier on the 2024-25 Penguins.
Capitals scouts also likely got a long look at St. Ivany in the AHL, as he played with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins for four seasons from 2022-23 through 2025–26. St. Ivany recorded three points (1g, 2a) in four regular-season games against the Hershey Bears last season and has played against Washington’s affiliate 31 total times in the regular season.
