Carey Price is now a San Jose Sharks legend.
The Canadiens shipped the injured goaltender and his huge cap number, along with a 2026 fifth-round draft pick, to the San Jose Sharks for prospect Gannon Laroque.
Price’s $10.5 million cap hit will help the Sharks reach the salary cap floor. He is an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season and will likely retire afterward. He’s spent the last three seasons on long-term injured reserve.
The 38-year-old goaltender last played in the 2021-22 season for Montreal due to a significant knee injury that derailed his career. Over the course of his 712-game stint with the Canadiens, Price posted a 361-261-79 record with a 2.51 goals-against average, a .917 save percentage, and 49 shutouts.
The British Columbia native was drafted fifth overall by Montreal in 2005 and went on to win the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, as well as the Hart Memorial Trophy, Ted Lindsay Award, Vezina Trophy, and William M. Jennings Trophy. He was also a seven-time NHL All-Star and won three senior gold medals with Team Canada, being named the best goaltender at the 2014 Winter Olympics.
Per Sportsnet, the Canadiens now have just over $4.56 million in cap space. The move comes after the Canadiens paid Price a $5.5-million signing bonus on September 1, leaving $2 million for the Sharks to cover over the remainder of the season.
Laroque, 22, missed the entire 2024-25 campaign due to injury and rehabbing from two separate hip surgeries. During the 2023-24 season, he played nine games with the ECHL’s Wichita Thunder and nine games with the AHL’s San Jose Barracuda. In 12 career AHL games, he has recorded three points (1g, 2a).
The 2021 fourth-round draft pick has one year remaining on his three-year, entry-level deal.
