Alex Ovechkin is on fire and on another historic run.
Just when we were all ready to write him off, the Capitals captain has scored in six straight games — five of which came after the team’s bye week (#CamelPower). His latest goal came after beating Colorado Avalanche goaltender Alexandar Georgiev with a shot from the Ovi Spot.
Ovechkin’s tally narrowed the Avalanche’s lead to 4-3 with 11 minutes remaining in the third period.
The goal came on a bang-bang play between Ovechkin and John Carlson while the Capitals were on a power play. The Capitals’ top rearguard, way out at the right point, threw a perfect pass into Ovechkin’s wheelhouse in the left circle. The NHL’s second-leading goal-scorer of all time then took care of the rest, beating Georgiev clean short side.
The goal marked Ovi’s 10th career goal on Georgiev, who previously played for the New York Rangers. See all the goalies Ovi has scored on in his career.
The celebration both by players and fans was initially delayed because the puck got caught under the goal frame’s back pad, causing confusion of whether the puck went in or not.
Notable, at least to me, Ovechkin scored on the power play where Josh Manson took a penalty at the 8:00 mark of the third period.
Ovechkin now has 836 goals in his unbelievable career, bringing him to within 58 of Wayne Gretzky for a share of first all-time. Ovi also now has 14 goals on the season and is now on pace to hit the 23-goal mark this year.
His goal-scoring streak is the stuff of legend. Per Capitals PR, Ovi is now only the third player EVER with a goal streak of six or more games at age 38 or older, joining Brett Hull (7 GP in 2003-04) and Johnny Bucyk (6 GP in 1974-75).
