Capitals place Tyler Lewington on waivers as Richard Panik nears return

The Washington Capitals placed defenseman Tyler Lewington on waivers Sunday.

Lewington hasn’t played since an October 15 game against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

If unclaimed, Lewington will likely be moved to Hershey as Richard Panik is eligible to return from the long-term injured reserve list, Monday. Panik would need a roster spot in order to play against his former team, the Arizona Coyotes.

Panik has been out since colliding head first into Jonas Siegenthaler against the Leafs.

Panik returned to practice without a no-contact jersey last Tuesday.

Moving Lewington to Hershey would leave the Capitals with only six defensemen on the roster.
