Alex Ovechkin scores twice, drags Caps kicking and screaming back into hockey game

Alex Ovechkin has notched his 12th and 13th goals of the season to tie Thursday’s game against the Florida Panthers.

Ovechkin’s second goal was unlikely deflection through the pack of defenders, but his first one was because the Panthers just plain old forgot about him all the way out on Ovi Island.

Goal 1

Down 3-1 in the second period, Washington went on the power play as big boy Brian Boyle served time for a slash. The Caps lined up in the offensive zone as the Panthers collapsed on the non-Ovi side of the ice.

You know where this is going. You’ve seen this before.

Kuznetsov sent a pass in a bottle to the desert island where Ovechkin stood alone. Into the net it went for Ovechkin’s 12th of the season.

Goal 2

Later that period, Dmitry Orlov settled the puck along the blue line. Orlov served it up to Ovi, who made the simple play. He put the puck on net, where it got lost among the legs of a bunch of Florida D-men before bouncing across the goal line.

Once down in a two-goal hole, Ovechkin has dragged the Caps back into this game.

Now with 671 career goals, Ovechkin sits in 12th place all time. He trails Teemu Selanne by 13.
