The Washington Capitals dropped a 3-0 decision to the New York Islanders on the final day of the NHL regular season. The game was meaningless to the Capitals and we now know that the boys will be taking on the Carolina Hurricanes in the first round of the playoffs.
The Caps out-shot the Isles 29 to 24.

- Alex Ovechkin‘s 51 goals on the season held as the highest total by any NHL goal scorer this season as Leon Draisaitl managed to score only 50. Ovi has now won the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy for the eighth time in his career, no other player has won this particular version more than twice.
- Ovi’s eight seasons where he has led the entire league in goals is the most an individual player has ever done so in history. He is the greatest goal scorer of all time.
- Ovi is also only the sixth NHL player to ever lead the league in goals at the age of 33 or older. The last to do so was Phil Esposito in 1974-75 and Ovi is about 150 days older than Espo was.
A player with more 1,000 career games on his NHL odometer has finished as the League's goal-scoring leader 3 times. Here's the list:

- Montreal Canadiens rookie, Ryan Poehling scored a hat-trick and the shootout winner in his first career NHL game Saturday night.
- The St. Louis Blues were dead last in the NHL with 34 points on January 2 and finished the season with 99 points, good for third in the Central Division.
- The Caps went 4-0 against the Carolina Hurricanes in the regular season. That probably means nothing now, get ready for the playoff jitters.
