The best moment of Tuesday’s generally bad Caps-Rangers game was Alex Ovechkin’s goal by way of Nate Schmidt’s pass. It was Ovechkin’s 6th goal of the season, Schmidt’s first point, and occasion to celebrate with an intense hug.
Speaking with the Post’s Isabelle Khurshudyan, Schmidt called the hug “magical,” and I think he means that in the Harry Potter sense, wherein hundreds of people die horrible deaths.

This is the hug in question.
That danger-tinged celebration conjures the memory of ex-Cap Joel Ward, who was similarly assaulted by the captain in May of 2013.
“I just didn’t want to fall and hit my head on the ice or something,” Ward told Chris Gordon way back when. “I was just trying to brace myself because [Ovi’s] a big body over there.”
Near-perfect human Sergei Fedorov echoed that sentiment in 2009: “When he jumped on me, I was like, Whoa, careful.”
It’s still unclear whom Alex Ovechkin will attack next in his celebratory hysteria. With a game against the no-luck Bruins tonight at 7 PM, we might not have to wait long to find out.
