After a brutal first period in which they gave up three goals to a team that — to put it mildly — is so bad you want to call in sick to work and listen to Nick Drake albums in the bath, the Caps temporarily surged in the second period.
First, Tom Wilson paid the price to draw a big penalty, then Nicklas Backstrom made it count.

The power play, already white hot, threatened Louis Domingue’s net from the drop. A loose puck in the slot was too enticing for TJ Oshie to pass up. Oshie dove to get the puck free and to Nicklas Backstrom, waiting on the weak side. Backstrom did not waste the opportunity.
The Caps powerplay is on a torrid pace.

It was Nick Backstrom’s 23rd goal and TJ Oshie’s 23rd assist, and, more importantly, it was a sign of life for a team that had flatlined in the first twenty minutes.
