Season Finale: Caps beat Devils 5-3

The Washington Capitals and New Jersey Devils met in both team’s last regular season game. In a tilt that still featured major playoff match up implications, the Caps were victorious and now know that they will be playing either the Columbus Blue Jackets or Philadelphia Flyers in the first round. Last recap of the 82-game regular season and you all got stuck with me!

Alex Ovechkin opened the scoring with his league leading 48th goal of the season. Nico Hischier tied things up for the Devils. Nicklas Backstrom restored the lead and Michal Kempny then added to it. Miles Wood scored to end the second and Patrick Maroon tied the game once more.

Ovi added one more. His 49th. Andre Burakovsky scored the Caps fifth.

Caps beat Devils 5-3!

  • Elyse took over the RMNB Instagram account at the NYC Caps Crew charity night. Go give the account a follow to watch Elyse’s hilarious shenanigans on our story.
  • Alex Ovechkin scored his 48th goal very early into the first period and was flying from the jump. That combination of things made not only 50 goals look likely, but maybe even an Ovechtrick. In the end, the Great Eight couldn’t get the hat trick to seal his 50-goal season, but he still put the Rocket Richard Trophy race out of reach and will once again be taking home that award this summer.
  • On Michal Kempny‘s second goal as a Capitals player, rookie Shane Gersich recorded an assist, his first NHL point. Congrats, Shane!
  • The result of the Blue Jackets and Nashville Predators game will determine the Capitals first round playoff opponent. If Columbus wins, the Caps play the Flyers. If Nashville wins, the Caps play the Blue Jackets.

  • Gersich is the eighth rookie to record a point for the Capitals this season and he’s also the sixth rookie to record his first career point this season for the Caps. That’s a lot of youth stepping up to fill holes left by a peculiar offseason.
  • WrestleMania 34 is tomorrow. I am very excited, the card is unreal. Give pro wrestling a try and find a way to watch their biggest show of the year.

  • If I don’t see you again for a recap until next year, thanks for everything this year guys and gals!

The next time we see the Caps they will be playing in the 2018 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Get ready for more extreme jubilation and devastating heartbreak.
