Logan Thompson is continuing his trend of integrating beloved movies into his goalie mask designs. His latest tribute honors the cult-classic film, Mars Attacks!, first released in 1996.
Dave Fried, Thompson’s personal mask painter, first revealed the design in several social media posts published on Saturday.
“Fun #marsattacks themed mask for Logan Thompson of the @Capitals continuing his movie 🍿 theme!!” wrote Fried. “Always so fun, thanks LT!”

The primarily red mask features the Weagle logo prominently on the crown and the Capitals’ wordmark near the jawline on both sides. The rest of the bucket is filled with Mars Attacks! imagery.
The movie’s bug-eyed, exposed-brain Martians are featured prominently on the left and right while flying saucers streak across a red, white, and blue background along with the aliens’ signature language, “ACK!” Jack Nicholson, who played U.S. President James Dale in the movie, holds up the peace sign while four movie characters are featured on the backplate, including Danny DeVito’s portrayal of Rude Gambler, a loudmouthed casino patron in Las Vegas. The phrase “NICE PLANET WE’LL TAKE IT!” completes the bucket.
Mars Attacks! is Tim Burton’s 1996 sci-fi black comedy about Martians invading Earth, based on the old Topps trading-card series introduced in 1962. The movie deliberately looks like an exaggerated 1950s alien-invasion film.
The movie is not only memorable and popular, but it also has a DC connection. Much of Tim Burton’s 1996 cult comedy unfolds in the nation’s capital, where the invading Martians arrive on Earth claiming to come in peace before annihilating Congress, storming the White House, and terrorizing the president and his family while communicating in their famous “Ack! Ack! Ack!” noises.
Thompson had previously worn masks with homages to Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian and National Treasure, whose plots were based in DC. Last season, he also wore masks that had imagery making fun of Tom Wilson and honoring the Capitals’ defense corps.
And for the record, because I don’t want to waste this research, this isn’t the first time Nicholson or DeVito have been featured on a mask design. Nicholson previously appeared as The Shining‘s Jack Torrance on a Dallas Stars mask for Richard Bachman in 2012. Bachman later revisited the Shining theme with Vancouver, again featuring Nicholson’s famous “Here’s Johnny” scene, paired with Johnny Canuck on the opposite side. The designs were a nod to Stephen King, who used the pen name “Richard Bachman.”
DeVito was featured on a Ken Wregget mask that featured the beloved actor as Penguin from Batman Returns. The Pittsburgh Penguins mask now resides at the Hockey Hall of Fame.
