Alex Ovechkin will have an opportunity to see his favorite footballer play for a championship.
According to TASS, the Washington Capitals’ captain will be at MetLife Stadium for the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final between Argentina and Spain. Kick-off is at 3 pm (ET).
“Alexander plans to attend the World Championship final,” Ovechkin’s agent Gleb Chistyakov said to the outlet.
Ovechkin returned to the United States from his native Russia this weekend to participate in Fanatics Fest at the Javits Center, where he signed autographs and took photos with paying fans.
The World Cup Final will be a special one for Ovechkin, who has been a huge Messi fan for over a decade. The two first met in 2015 when Argentina played El Salvador at then FedEx Field with Ovechkin presenting a signed jersey to the superstar soccer player.
“One of the best moment!!!” Ovechkin wrote.
Ovechkin’s Messi fandom has appeared to only grow since then. When Argentina completed a stunning comeback against France to advance to the final late last week, Ovechkin was euphoric, hugging his son Sergei and grinning ear to ear.
At Fanatics Fest, Ovechkin took a photo with a signed jersey from the Argentine superstar.
Sunday, Argentina will be looking to repeat as champions after defeating France in 2022 and capturing its third World Cup title. And in the process make one of their famous fans very excited.
