Still alive! Caps beat Penguins 3-0! Sid and Ovi’s last meeting?

For the 100th time in history, Alex Ovechkin‘s Washington Capitals faced off against Sidney Crosby‘s Pittsburgh Penguins. Maybe it was the last time.

There was just one goal through two periods, and it belonged to – you guessed it – Trevor van Riemsdyk, who kept stabbing at a loose puck until it hit the scoreboard.

With four and a half minutes left in the third, Ryan Leonard hit up Connor McMichael on the rush to make it 2-0, then he added an empty-netter set up by Ovechkin to secure it.

Caps win!

  • The Caps got banged up yesterday. Pierre-Luc Dubois and Rasmus Sandin were both game-time decisions. PLD was in, Sandin was not. That Sandin was even plausible to play is good news to me – I feared he had one of the real bad injuries.
  • In the first period, Justin Sourdif scored a goal by taking a rebound  off the crossbar to beat Pittsburgh goalie Stuart Skinner, except Ilya Protas was a step offside on the rush.
  • A real goal came from Trevor van Riemsdyk.
  • The least told story in the NHL is how much Marty Fehervary and Crosby seem to hate each other. Crosby tripped Fehervary in this one. Apart from Sid, Marty committed two penalties of his own.
  • Tom Wilson blocked an Erik Karlsson shot late in the second period. I thought he was done for the day. I could have been convinced he was done for the year. He came back for the third, but I think he missed a shift or two. Sometime while you’re reading this, Caps trainers are carefully removing the skate from his disgusting, bloated foot like Darth Vader putting his helmet on in reverse. Gonna look like Baelor Breakspear after the Trial of the Seven down there.
  • Three-point game for Connor McMichael. He got a secondary on TVR’s goal.
  • Logan Thompson. Yet another two-period shutout. And like the last one, this too became a full-game shutout – his fourth of the season.

Just another game #joebsuitofthenight

The Caps needed this win. Not being metaphorical or philosophical or any of that nerd shit. It’s made-up. It’s not real. The only thing that is real is sports. The only thing that is real is the standings and getting into the loffs. Which….

Well, I suppose that would mean more Ovi games – whether or not he’s retiring this summer. And it very well could mean some more playoff games between Sid and Ovi in the first round.

I’d like that. I’d love that. Yes, I wish that. Give me one.

So the Caps better obliterate the Blue Jackets on Tuesday.
