Alex Ovechkin has never played for a different NHL team during his 21 seasons in the league, but on Friday, he was nearly a part of the Vegas Golden Knights’ annual team photo.
The almost-Ovechkin photobomb, either intentional or accidental, occurred as the Washington Capitals gathered in the locker room tunnel to head out for practice at T-Mobile Arena. While the Golden Knights usually skate at their practice facility 20 minutes away, they instead dressed in full gear at their home barn.
Former Capitals centerman Nic Dowd, who was traded to the Golden Knights earlier in the month after eight seasons in DC, was immediately reminded who was back in town when he heard Vegas’s photographer address the NHL’s all-time leading goal-scorer.
“I think just with everything that’s been going on this morning, I completely forgot,” Dowd told Vegas reporters. “Like, for a split instant of the capture here, and I heard the camera guy go, ‘Ovi, if you could stand back.’ And I was kind of like, ‘Ovi?’ And then I was like, ‘Oh, yeah, the guys are here.’
“I mean, O is O, man. He’s a big character, and I hope he’s in the photo.”
