The Washington Capitals have placed forward Sonny Milano on NHL waivers on Wednesday.
Milano was waived as the Capitals are currently carrying a full 23-man roster after activating Connor McMichael from injured reserve. The other 31 NHL teams will have 24 hours to claim Milano. If they don’t, the Caps can send him to the AHL’s Hershey Bears.
Milano, an oft-healthy scratch, has played in 31 games this season for the Capitals, recording eight points (4g, 4a). The 29-year-old winger came into this past fall’s training camp without being assured a spot on the club’s final roster, having played in just three games last year due to injury.
When he originally signed with the Capitals in 2022, Milano had a stint with the Bears in the AHL, notching three points (2g, 1a) in five games. The veteran forward, currently signed at a $1.9 million cap hit, is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent in the summer.
McMichael missed the team’s final four games before the Olympic break after suffering an injury on January 29 against the Detroit Red Wings. In 55 games this season, the 25-year-old McMichael has recorded 31 points (8g, 23a).
The Capitals return to play after the break against the Philadelphia Flyers at Capital One Arena on Wednesday night.
