Logan Thompson will get his first taste of Olympic hockey on Friday.
The Washington Capitals’ number-one netminder has been tabbed to start for Team Canada in their second game at the 2026 Winter Olympics against Switzerland. Former Caps goalie Darcy Kuemper will back Thompson up.
Thompson gets the nod after he backed up Jordan Binnington in Canada’s 5-0 win over Czechia on Thursday. Binnington made 26 saves in the shutout victory, rewarding head coach Jon Cooper for his predetermined faith in the St. Louis Blues backstop.
In 39 appearances for the Capitals this season, Thompson is 19-16-4 with a 2.45 goals-against average, a .912 save percentage, and two shutouts. According to MoneyPuck, Thompson has also racked up 18.4 goals saved above expected this year, which is the most of any goaltender at the Olympics.
According to TSN’s Mark Masters, here is the full Canadian lineup against the Swiss:
Extras: Bennett, Sanheim
Friday’s game pits the top two teams in Group A against one another, with Switzerland securing a shutout win of its own over France on Thursday. The Swiss got two goals from New Jersey Devils winger Timo Meier, one from Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman JJ Moser, and another from former Capitals prospect Damien Riat.
