Martin Fehervary received a huge honor from his national team.
Monday, the Capitals’ 26-year-old defenseman was named alternate captain of the Slovakian Olympic team.
Former NHL legend Tomas Tatar, who currently plays for EV Zug of the Swiss National League, will be the team’s captain. Erik Cernak, a defenseman on the Tampa Bay Lightning, will join Fehervary as an alternate.
Per the Slovakian national team’s announcement on Instagram and as translated by Meta:
There is no big surprise – in the position of captain the Slovak team at ZOH Tomáš Tatar will lead.
Assistants will be Erik Cernák and Martin Fehérváry.
As coach Vladimír Országh said: “Three players will have the letter on the jersey, but we believe that all will be leaders.”
The nod for Fehervary comes after he won the Róbert Švehla Award as best Slovak defenseman for the third consecutive year.
Fehervary’s appearance at the Olympics marks his first with Slovakia. He’s played on his country’s senior World Championship team four different times in his career.
Fehervary, a veteran of 357 NHL games, has recorded 20 points (4g, 16a) in 58 games during the 2025-26 campaign, his sixth in the NHL. He was named to Slovakia’s Olympic roster last June as one of the first six members of the team.
