The Washington Capitals are still the walking wounded as they head into Detroit to play the Red Wings on Thursday night.

Head coach Spencer Carbery revealed after the club’s morning skate that number-one goaltender Logan Thompson is out day-to-day with an upper-body injury. Thompson, who played the full 60 minutes against the Seattle Kraken on Tuesday night, won’t dress against Detroit, as the Capitals recalled Clay Stevenson to back up Charlie Lindgren.

“[Thompson will] be day-to-day with an upper-body injury,” Carbery said.

While Thompson did finish his last start, in which he gave up five goals on 32 shots, there was a notable moment in the loss that may hint at why he’s ailing. With 16:59 remaining in the second period, Thompson took a slap shot to the mask from Kraken defenseman Vince Dunn.

The powerful blast took the helmet right off of Thompson’s head, and he needed a few moments to collect himself. Capitals head athletic trainer Jason Serbus made his way onto the ice to check on the stunned goaltender but ultimately returned to the team’s bench without Thompson. The game’s concussion spotter did not get involved to remove Thompson from the action.

With Thompson out of action, Charlie Lindgren will make his fifth start in January. In his prior four appearances, he is 1-2-1 with a 4.52 goals-against average and a .880 save percentage.
