The Washington Capitals couldn’t make it back-to-back wins in matinee matchups. After taking down the New York Rangers on Wednesday, the Caps flew up to Ottawa and were handed a 4-3 loss by the Senators.
Really rough last two periods. Tough to watch.
- The Capitals created six high-danger chances in the first period and didn’t give up a single one to the Ottawa Senators. In the final two periods, they created just one and gave up nine to the Senators. I don’t think I have to explain much more than that. Fatigue was likely a big factor, but the Caps have also been doing this late in games when they have had rest. So, I don’t know… they really need to start playing better with leads.
- Justin Sourdif followed up a multi-point game with another multi-point game, recording two assists in the loss. He also absolutely flattened Thomas Chabot and got into his first career NHL fight against Drake Batherson.
- Tom Wilson stayed red hot, recording two points (1g, 1a) to give him eight points (5g, 3a) in his last three games. He now has 42 points (22g, 20a) in 40 games this season, putting him on pace to finish the year with 45 goals and 85 points.
- MoneyPuck did not love Logan Thompson’s game, having him down for 0.61 more goals allowed than expected. He made 28 saves on 32 shots faced. Thompson has won just one of his last five starts.
- The Capitals were hurting badly with Dylan Strome on the ice at five-on-five, posting negative differentials in shot attempts (-5), shots on goal (-4), goals (-3), scoring chances (-10), and high-danger chances (-6). They didn’t score with him over the boards, nor did they record a high-danger chance of their own.
- There is some special teams stuff at play, but in a back-to-back with travel, you probably want to see Hendrix Lapierre (7:12) and Brandon Duhaime (8:37) play more. Either that, or the Capitals need to bring in some guys that the coaching staff is willing to play more.
