ARLINGTON, VA — Alex Ovechkin did not join his teammates on Friday for the second on-ice day of training camp at MedStar Capitals Iceplex. Per the team, Ovechkin sat out with a lower-body injury.

While he briefly participated in the first day of camp, Ovechkin left the ice soon after the start of his skate. Head coach Spencer Carbery told reporters later that day that he wasn’t worried about Ovechkin’s health.

“He came off early today, nothing significant,” he said at the time.

Ovechkin, too, expressed little concern about the injury on Thursday, though he wasn’t certain whether he’d be able to take part in Friday’s skate.

“I don’t know,” he said then. “We’ll see tomorrow.”

After breaking the all-time NHL goals record in April, Ovechkin is set to play his 21st season in the league this fall at age 40. He currently sits just nine games away from 1,500 total games played and three goals away from hitting 900.

The Capitals also went without the services of defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk on Friday. Van Riemsdyk missed the skate for personal reasons, per the team.

Washington is set to play its first game of the preseason on Sunday against the Boston Bruins.
