Washington Capitals defenseman Martin Fehervary is nearing a return to full health after undergoing knee surgery to repair his meniscus in April.

General manager Chris Patrick revealed the news during the a press conference after the 2025 NHL Draft, Saturday.

“He’s doing great. All very positive progress from the medical group,” Patrick said. “He’s pretty much at the point now where he can start his normal offseason training.”

Fehervary suffered the injury during the first period of the Caps’ 3-1 victory over the New York Islanders on April 15. The Slovakian defenseman appeared to catch his skate awkwardly on the ice while blocking a shot from Bo Horvat. Fehervary was seen shaking out his right leg before leaving for the locker room.

The 25-year-old rearguard returned in the second period and finished out the game, but was forced to miss the team’s regular season finale against the Pittsburgh Penguins as well as the entire postseason.

A little over two months since the operation, Fehervary’s apparently on track to be ready for the Capitals’ training camp in September.

“Marty’s a machine, so you can’t keep him down too long,” Patrick said.

The quick recovery for Fehervary comes at a great time as he was named one of Team Slovakia’s six initial roster members ahead of the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina.

He’s also reportedly nearing an extension with the Capitals, per Sportsnet’s Elliott Friedman, who believes the team has “a real desire” to sign Fehervary longterm as soon he’s eligible on July 1.

Fehervary set a new career high in points (25) and assists (20) last season in 81 games, stepping into his role as part of the Caps’ top pair of defensemen with alternate captain John Carlson.
