The 2025 NHL Draft — the 63rd entry draft in the league’s history — is being held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, California. The event began at 7 PM (ET), airing on ESPN and ESPN+ in the United States and Sportsnet in Canada.
The New York Islanders made Erie Otters defenseman Matthew Schaefer the first overall selection in the draft. The 17-year-old OHL rearguard is the first player to be taken no. 1 from the Otters since Connor McDavid in 2015.
With their first pick, 27th overall, the Washington Capitals drafted forward Lynden Lakovic out of WHL Moose Jaw.
This year’s event will be the first non-COVID-impacted draft to be held in a decentralized format in NHL history. Teams will not be physically present at the venue to make their selections.
