The Washington Capitals will be without Martin Fehervary for the remainder of the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Fehervary underwent surgery to repair the meniscus in his right knee on Monday. The Caps announced the news ahead of their practice on Tuesday morning.
“Washington Capitals defenseman Martin Fehervary sustained an injury to his right knee during the April 15 game against the New York Islanders,” the team tweeted. “Fehervary underwent a successful surgical procedure yesterday to repair the meniscus and will miss the rest of the playoffs.”
Fehervary played in 81 straight games during the regular season until his knee injury forced him to miss the final game of the year against the Pittsburgh Penguins. He posted career highs in points (25) and assists (20), skating 19:00 of ice time per game.
The 25-year-old Slovakian defender appeared to suffer the injury during the first period of the game against the Islanders. He departed the game but returned in the second period and finished out the rest of regulation.
Alex Alexeyev replaced Fehervary in the lineup in Pittsburgh and played in Game 1 against the Montreal Canadiens on Monday night. Alexeyev had his own injury scare, getting high-sticked in the mouth by Canadiens forward Jake Evans.
The Capitals also have veteran defensemen Dylan McIlrath and Ethan Bear in reserve. Bear was recalled from the AHL’s Hershey Bears shortly after Fehervary suffered his injury.
