Alex Ovechkin jumped back on X to tweet something non-promotion-related for the first time in three years. And for a legendary reason.
Ovechkin, who broke the NHL goals record on Sunday, apparently has not received 895 beers on his driveway. Instead, the 28 goaltenders who faced at least one Ovi shot during their careers and didn’t surrender a goal were honored by Budweiser Canada on Monday and named “Kings of Zero.” Each goalie, including former Capital Michal Neuvirth, received a commemorative can of beer for this rare feat.
Former Maple Leafs netminder Curtis Joseph, one of the only Vezina Trophy nominated goalies to make the list, took a photo with his new souvenir and tweeted, “Congrats to the greatest goal scorer of all time @ovi8. Feeling very lucky to have NOT been a part of it! 2 shots, 0 goals.”
After hearing about the promotion, Ovechkin apparently logged back in for the first time to tell Joseph, “Thx u!! I probably score goal on next shot but u retired !!”
Folks, that is chirping and at an elite level.
To reach 895 and break Wayne Gretzky’s record, Ovechkin scored on the New York Islanders’ Ilya Sorokin, the 183rd different goaltender he’s beaten in his career.
Budweiser’s goalie idea is likely inspired by their viral campaign when Lionel Messi broke Pele’s record for the most goals scored for a single club. The 160 goalkeepers who gave up goals to the legendary striker were given 644 bottles of beer.
