Is this year’s camel a dolphin?
A little over a year after Alex Ovechkin vacationed in Dubai and finished the 2023-24 season on a huge heater (23 goals in 36 games), the Capitals captain encountered some different wildlife altogether while boating in Miami with his family and former Capital Dmitry Orlov.
Ovechkin, wearing a black Miami hat, saw a (perhaps lucky) dolphin jumping in the wake of a speedboat as he was riding along with Nastya Ovechkina, his two sons, and Orlov – a fellow 2018 Stanley Cup champion, who now plays for the Carolina Hurricanes.
Nastya posted a video to her Instagram Story of the playful marine mammal swimming with the boat as the family looked on.
Ovechkin first arrived in Miami earlier in the week and said he has plans to train with a mystery former NHL player.
“I will have a small training camp with a person whose name I will not name yet,” Ovechkin said to RG. “But he played in the NHL. Let’s make a little mystery out of this. And it is not Ilya Kovalchuk. Maybe you will see this on my or his social media. He is a famous person.”
Ovechkin has 40 points (26g, 14a) through 38 games this season and is just 16 goals shy of breaking Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goals record. Spencer Carbery believes Ovechkin will play at an even higher level when he returns.
The Capitals will have 27 games remaining in the season once play re-begins next Saturday against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
