Sports teams in Philadelphia, Ohio, and Calgary showed their respects to Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew on Friday.

The Gaudreau brothers tragically died on Thursday night after being hit by a suspected drunk driver as they biked near their hometown in New Jersey. Both were in the area to be groomsmen at their sister’s wedding.

The South Jersey natives grew up about half an hour south of Philadelphia and were huge fans of the sports teams there including the NFL’s Eagles and MLB’s Phillies.

The Phillies held a moment of silence for the Gaudreau brothers at Citizens Bank Park before first pitch.

“We join the sports world in mourning the passing of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau,” the Phillies wrote on X. “The Phillies send their deepest condolences to the Gaudreau family, and to the entire NHL family for this seismic loss to their beloved community.”

The Eagles also tweeted a photo of the brothers in customized jerseys, calling the Gaudreaus “cherished members of the Philadelphia & New Jersey community and part of our Eagles family.”

Philadelphia Eagles

While at the 2023 NHL All-Star Game, Johnny Gaudreau talked about his Eagles fandom and how big of a fan he was of quarterback Jalen Hurts.

“It’s crazy how [far] he’s come from last season,” Gaudreau told Olivia Reiner of the Philly Enquirer. “The way he throws the ball, the way he can run the ball. It’s just been a lot of fun to watch.”

Hurts went to X to share his appreciation of their support.

“I’m deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Johnny & Matthew Gaudreau. Johnny was a dedicated hockey player, Birds fan & cherished member of the Eagles faithful. I want to send my heartfelt condolences to the entire Gaudreau family & those impacted by this loss!#FlyJohnnyFly 🙏🏾”

Johnny Gaudreau was also a fan of the NHL’s Flyers and grew up playing for the Little Flyers, located in Aston, Pennsylvania, from 2004 through 2009. Matthew did so from 2007 and 2009.

The Flyers wrote on social media, “Both were members of Gloucester Catholic High School, Team Comcast and the Philadelphia Little Flyers. Matthew reconnected with the Flyers organization where he played for our ECHL affiliate, the Reading Royals, and later joined the coaching ranks in Philadelphia, which included his high school.

“Johnny and Matthew were, and always will be, beloved and cherished members of the Flyers community and entire hockey world.”

After becoming an unrestricted free agent in 2022, Johnny Gaudreau spent the last two seasons as a member of the Columbus Blue Jackets. Both of Ohio’s MLB teams, the Cincinnati Reds and the Cleveland Guardians, held moments of silence before their games.
