Sports teams in Philadelphia, Ohio, and Calgary showed their respects to Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew on Friday.
The Gaudreau brothers tragically died on Thursday night after being hit by a suspected drunk driver as they biked near their hometown in New Jersey. Both were in the area to be groomsmen at their sister’s wedding.
The South Jersey natives grew up about half an hour south of Philadelphia and were huge fans of the sports teams there including the NFL’s Eagles and MLB’s Phillies.
The Phillies held a moment of silence for the Gaudreau brothers at Citizens Bank Park before first pitch.
“We join the sports world in mourning the passing of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau,” the Phillies wrote on X. “The Phillies send their deepest condolences to the Gaudreau family, and to the entire NHL family for this seismic loss to their beloved community.”

While at the 2023 NHL All-Star Game, Johnny Gaudreau talked about his Eagles fandom and how big of a fan he was of quarterback Jalen Hurts.
“It’s crazy how [far] he’s come from last season,” Gaudreau told Olivia Reiner of the Philly Enquirer. “The way he throws the ball, the way he can run the ball. It’s just been a lot of fun to watch.”
Hurts went to X to share his appreciation of their support.
“I’m deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Johnny & Matthew Gaudreau. Johnny was a dedicated hockey player, Birds fan & cherished member of the Eagles faithful. I want to send my heartfelt condolences to the entire Gaudreau family & those impacted by this loss!#FlyJohnnyFly 🙏🏾”
